My Looks

Coming Up Roses

What I wore for Mother's Day dinner (at our local hibachi place, of course): a simple summer dress with fun details that I picked up for $19.50 at the mall, and then lightened up even more with white and rose-gold accessories.

We chose hibachi because we like it - obviously; that stuff is delicious - but also because convincing a toddler to sit still for the entire duration of a meal can be tough...but is made exponentially easier by the presence of flying eggs and fire.

My favorite part: the bright-pink lipstick (YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in Devotion). I love the pairing of mint green and bright pink - so fresh and springy.

Style

One Shirt, Three Ways

When it comes to investing in a piece that you can wear over and over (and over), there's nothing like a good striped shirt. I look for tops that are lightweight and not-too-tight...but whatever your personal favorite fit is, once you find it in striped-shirt form you can take it everywhere.

Kate Hudson Capsule Collection For Ann Taylor

I did an interview last week during which the reporter asked me who my "celebrity style icon" was, and I was sort of flummoxed. I even almost automatically blurted out "Audrey Hepburn" just because she seems to be the de facto "style icon" who people mention in interviews, even though there are probably few celebrities on the planet whose style resembles mine less.

I do not do ballet flats and pearls particularly well, nor am I pixieishly adorable. C'est la vie.

So I free-associated for a minute, thinking about which red carpet dresses pop instantly into my mind as all-time favorites, and came up with Cate Blanchett's 1999 John Galliano, Cameron Diaz's 2002 Ungaro, Michelle Williams' 2006 Vera Wang, Kate Hudson in that white dress, Kate Hudson in that gold dress, Kate Hudson in that flowery Valentino she wore to the Oscars that one time, and Kate Hudson every time she's ever appeared on The Late Show. Or anywhere, generally.

So: Kate Hudson it was.

Mother’s Day Makeovers

I love Mother's Day.

Not because it's a day when my mom and I get to spend time together - we do that plenty anyways - but rather because we always end up getting dressed up and doing something sort of adorably Mother's Day-ish, like afternoon tea or brunch somewhere fancy (like we did last year, pictured above) or what have you.

Something different. Memory-making. You get the idea.

My Looks

Whatever, Heat Makes Me Wacky

Alright, so this is what I've been wearing for most of this week. Sort of a Parody Of A Tourist On Vacation, what with the ridiculous (by which I mean amazing, of course) hat, completely beach-inappropriate (yet also amazing, of course) jewelry, comfortable t-shirts (but with a touch of pizazz), and denim shorts (I love the print on these).

From the neck down it's 100% me, and then from the neck up it's sort of like me if I were the kind of extremely wealthy that makes you dress weird, and maybe forty or fifty years older.

I think it's fantastic. And it hides my hair, which is in a sort of in-between bang stage thanks to the fact that I haven't had any time to make it to the salon for a trim, and has decided to transform into an Angry Humidity Creature unless I pull it into this twisty updo thing (I'll show you later on; it's actually a pretty handy trick for those of you who might be growing out your bangs in the summertime).

Gorgeous Polish, Great Cause

Presenting: Ann Taylor's beautiful new polish palette, created to support the fight against breast cancer.

Although I think you can't lose with that pale shade on the left, my personal favorite is Ribbon Pink (in the center).

It's what I chose for this week's beachy travels; I felt like it was summery but still classic (you can see Kendrick photobombing his approval in the background).

In My Carry-On

Alright, so maybe I've been packed for nearly a week now. What can I say? This is going to be the first time the three of us are traveling together on a flight longer than an hour and a half (we've previously taken Indy on a plane to visit my family in Canada, but that's it), and I guess I'm a little anxious.

The chances that I've forgotten something major are 100%, but I figure as long as we have an iPad and some emergency pasta in the carry-on we're good for the plane ride, and we can pick up anything else we might need once we land.

What else is coming in my carry-on? Let's take a look.

Out With The Old, In With The Blue

Alright, I'm not gonna lie: this isn't my favorite outfit in the world.

The pants? Favorite. I bought them in Colorado and have barely taken them off since; they're just the most comfortable things in the world.

And I love them with the teal blouse and the matching shoes, but the navy sweater just...eh. It sort of dulls down the whole look.

But you know what? Sometimes one is cold, and so one puts on a navy sweater that doesn't quite match because that's just how life goes. And yeah, this sweater is a good eight years old and has seen better days, but I have so many fond memories of it that I wanted to wear it one more time before it gets too warm.
