On Wednesday I drove into the city, and it was one of those perfect fall days where you actually can wear...you know, fall clothing.

Simple Saturday Style
Over the course of this weekend, I'm posting some of my favorite fall looks created using pieces I found at TJ Maxx. Which basically refers to about 80-90% of my wardrobe anyway...so this wasn't exactly a tough one.
This outfit, worn to lunch in town and then an afternoon playdate at a friend's place, is a couldn't-be-simpler combo of a cream cashmere sweater and bellbottoms, but what I think makes it interesting are 1) the neckline of the sweater (after I found the cream one, I went back the very next day and bought the exact same sweater in grey, because it's just that great of a piece...and was about 60% less than what you'd expect to pay for a designer cashmere sweater) and 2) that rainbow purse.
Such a find.
Simple For Fall (And Floral Jeans Tips)
I've gotten a bunch of questions about how to wear floral denim, and the answer is that there are tons of fun ways - it's not as tricky a piece as you might think.

Holiday Gift Ideas: For Him
If you're looking to go big this holiday season, gifts for the guy in your life don't get better than these.
Try an old-school-upgraded record player (it records LPs onto CDs, too) and an assortment of vintage (or new) vinyl, an extremely badass leather jacket (this is the same one that Gregory House wears on the show), a rugged watch (either classic or carabiner), or a wireless speaker system perfect for everything from camping to conference calls.

I’m obviously quite fixated on hats this season, and while I generally skew towards the affordable, I can’t help but salivate over a few fantasy items.

Talk To Me About Rescue Dogs?
My tiny Ewok
It's been two months since we lost our girl, and it's getting close to the time when I feel ready to bring another dog into our family. I needed a minute to recuperate after Lucy died - emotionally, of course, but I also needed a second to breathe, because the last few months of her life were...a lot. Besides the logistical work - vet appointments, messes to be cleaned - I worried about her all the time. I'd wake up in the middle of the night to check her breathing, or terrify myself imagining the worst when she didn't run up to greet me at the door when I came home (which, towards the end, she never did).
I was exhausted from the sheer volume of care she required - that on top of the care required by the other living things in my household - and honestly? I wanted to rest. But now my kids are starting to mention wanting another dog, and not just that: They've taken on a bunch of pet-related responsibilities (scooping the litterbox is one of them, thank Jesus) to try to convince me that they'll help out with the walking and training and such, and I want to reward their efforts.

I'm going to do one of Paintillio's custom paint-by-numbers pieces as a form of art therapy, and am considering this as the pic to use. I posted a few other contenders - plus some thoughts on the pure vanity/pure awesomeness of painting yourself - over on IG, and would be curious to hear your thoughts.
This article about Al Franken's exit from the Senate is an essential read - not to mention an extraordinary work of journalism. (The Case Of Al Franken, via The New Yorker.)

Indonesia-Bound: A Packing Post
Me, one week from now
Next Tuesday, I leave for two weeks in Indonesia and Hong Kong with my father. It is now Thursday. Obviously this is the appropriate day to begin packing. (Can you tell I'm a little anxious about the trip? By Monday we're going to have a steady Xanax drip going over here.)
In keeping with my newfound "capsule" approach to packing - in short, giving the process actual thought rather than just throwing a bunch of crap into a bag and hoping that it turns out to be the crap I actually need - I have decided to make All The Lists. And I am going to make them here. Isn't that fun?
The Girl Who Flew

I think it’s pretty obvious that right now my life involves a lot of traveling. Like, way more than I’ve ever done before - right now I'm in NYC with Goldie for a few days, and in two weeks I'm headed back to St. Louis, and in between there is a trip to Los Angeles to host an event...and of course it’s all (mostly) fun and exciting, but it’s also a lot. Traveling, for me, is equal parts enjoyable and stressful, but not having everything I need with me when I have to get on the computer mid-air or charge a phone during a layover or look like a human being for an early-morning call time makes it lean far more towards the latter.
