The last time I got my hair cut was a full year ago, almost to the day.

Good To Know / Salty Water Hair Care
I'm going to be all about the beachin' in weeks to come (headed to Mexico with Nadine for a press trip, then Morgan's wedding in San Diego, then - fingers crossed - some kind of sun/sand/happiness-related activity every weekend thereafter with Kendrick), so before departing the John Sahag Workshop I asked Doug how to protect my brand-new Keratin treatment from the ravages of salt water.
Book Tour Day 1: Photo Diary
I think I lived six or seven lifetimes yesterday. It literally did not stop from the moment I opened my eyes at six until the moment my head hit my pillow at midnight.
Oh, excerpt for once. I have this little quirk: interacting with other human beings in an environment where the focus is on me generates this very specific kind of stress that has the unfortunate byproduct of making me fall asleep. You know those fainting goat videos? Like that.
So yeah, I fell asleep flat on my stomach on my parents' bed an hour before I was due to walk onto a stage and talk about pregnancy for an hour and a half. I did end up making it on time, but my micro-nap had the effect of making me a little loopy, so I went ahead and told an audience of strangers about that time when I was giving birth to my second child and was so terrified of having a repeat of my terrible, horrible, accidentally natural first birth experience that I hit the little GIVE ME DRUGS button as often as I possibly could, which meant that by the time my daughter came into the world I was a very special kind of high that made me think it might be a good idea to pull a Kourtney Kardashian and pull my daughter out...myself. The teeny tiny iota of my brain that was still functioning properly at that moment very fortunately alerted me to the fact that this would be an extremely bad idea, so I went ahead and let the doctor handle the baby-extrication process, but oh man, it was close.
A Few Things I Learned This Week
Even in the rain, Christmas in NYC is lovely (image via)
I just realized that I've been in New York City for a week now, and have barely even mentioned it (although I've been Instagramming and Snapchatting the bejeesus out of this trip, per usual). I flew in mostly because my aunt Trudy (who lives in a part of Canada that's extremely difficult and expensive to get to from San Jose) has never met Goldie, and so I used miles to fly to the city during a time when she was planning to be there visiting my mom.
One of the more exciting things that happened this week was that Erin and I met up with our editors at Penguin Random House to discuss the details of our book launch in the spring (The Big Fat Activity Book for Pregnant People officially comes out on April 25, although it's available for preorder now). We'll be doing events on both coasts, so I'll keep you guys posted in case you'd like to swing by for pickles and ice cream and hugs and such. And! And and and! We also found out that the book is being picked up for publication in the U.K., France, and Poland - which means that there's a decent chance that Erin and I will end up hanging out in Britain at some point early next year. Tea and crumpets! Adorable London boutiques! HOTEL BEDS.
Welcome To The New Ramshackle Glam!
Presenting: a major project we've had in the works these last couple of months.
I thought it was time for RG to get a facelift, and worked with Anthony Creek of Thoughtbox (who you might remember as that guy who completely saved my job and my life about a year ago) to create a cleaner, more easy-to-read site (and I am SO excited that it worked out so that we're launching right as we embark on this major adventure).
I hope you like it as much as I do! Would love to hear your thoughts, and if there's anything you'd really like to see please let me know - it's a work in progress, as always, and I want to make the time you spend here as fun and fuss-free as possible.
Meet My Little Miracle
Well Suited
Something about tailored clothing (and especially suits) always makes me feel like an alien, or maybe like a five-year-old with messy hair who's been hanging out in Mommy's closet; it just never has quite the effect I hoped it would, and so I've more or less given up on the look and defaulted to Bohemian (a.k.a. "messy") over the years.
And then I cut my hair. And I'm sure we're all sick of The Haircut Heard 'Round The World (or at least 'Round The RG) by now, but for real: overnight, it made me feel like I wanted to - and maybe even could - wear anything. I loved my long hair, but it always made me feel a little…blowsy. Like if I wore anything even the least bit fancy, it was all a bit too much. And now everything from the neck up feels simple and sporty and not fussy at all, and so it feels a lot easier to play around with what's going on down below.
I have never worn anything even remotely like this before in my life.
Major Hair Makeover
Happened!
OK, so as it turns out: I should have had short hair all along.
Here's the thing: it's just a haircut, right? But the second - and I mean the second - that ponytail was off my head, I suddenly felt…like myself. People keep saying "Do you feel so free?!" and YES.
Holiday Celebrations & Style Suggestions
Oh my goodness, I had so much fun hosting the White House Black Market holiday collection party with Marie Claire last week (above, I'm with my cohosts Christine and Julie). I started by getting to catch up with old friends (including some college buddies I haven't seen in ages), met a bunch of new ones...and then ended with Shake Shack on the Metronorth back home, and that is a fantastic night if I've ever heard of one.
Thank you to everyone who came out - you totally made my night!
New Color, New Care
Q. Can you post some photos of your hair color? I have a hair appointment coming up and need inspiration!
A. I went quite a bit lighter this time than I usually do; I wanted to look nice and summery for next week's trip, but was also just generally looking for something a little different. My colorist, Doug at John Sahag Workshop, usually does balayage, but this time he lightened up the base color with a mild single process (only left on for about five minutes) before adding highlights.
