My Looks

On The Bright Side

There are rules that you're supposed to follow if you want to wear denim-on-denim. I've even written about them; they include things like making sure the denim pieces are different weights and colors, breaking up the look with pops of color, et cetera et cetera.

But honestly? To me, the key to this look is dealing with the fact that you're wearing head-to-toe denim and maybe overdoing it just a bit. Nothing wrong with that.

How I broke up this particular denim-on-denim look: with brown leather accents (and a touch of floral), and - most importantly - a shot of neon. Ooh, those heels.

Entertaining Inspiration: Colorful Jar As Unique Water (Or Wine) Carafe

I have a water pitcher. It's ten thousand years old and made of raffia, which isn't a great combo.

I've been meaning to pick up a new one in preparation for summer (I like to use pitchers to serve my BBQ guests homemade sangria), but how much prettier - and more fun - is this idea?

The key is to look for a jar - whether vintage or brand-new - with interesting details that make it anything but ordinary; I love the contrast between the rustic wood-and-twine stopper on this jar and my delicate gold-rimmed water glasses.

Mother’s Day Makeovers

I love Mother's Day.

Not because it's a day when my mom and I get to spend time together - we do that plenty anyways - but rather because we always end up getting dressed up and doing something sort of adorably Mother's Day-ish, like afternoon tea or brunch somewhere fancy (like we did last year, pictured above) or what have you.

Something different. Memory-making. You get the idea.

My Looks

Flowers In The Market

During my junior year of college, I decided to take a semester to study abroad in London. I enrolled at University College London, and ended up living in a dorm room that looked very much like a prison cell (complete with a serious mildew-and-spiders problem, oh my god) but was fortunately located in a part of town that - to my mind, anyway - was definitely the coolest.

The best part of where we lived: it was about a two-minute walk away from the Camden markets, a sort of linked-up bunch of retail shops that sold everything from souvenirs to club wear to food and antiques. (If none of this is still true, apologies - we're working from 10-year-old memories here.) I didn't do a lot of shopping while I lived in London, actually (because of the whole Terrible Exchange Rate issue), but I did buy a few things.

And my favorite thing that I bought was this skirt.

{ My in-an-airport must-buy: one of these ridiculous things from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory ... }

{ ... A rediscovery of my very first 'fancy' wallet: a Burberry that's over a decade old, but still looks pretty decent ... }

P.S. Don't forget to post images of your best T.J. Maxx finds on Instagram with the hashtag #maxxstyle - this month, I'm working with the brand to choose the winner of a $500 gift card (they'll also be picking one winner of a $50 gift card every week).
