A New Twist On Tradition

Everybody gets their mother flowers for Mother’s Day; it’s kind of a rule. But there’s no rule that says that those flowers have to be boring.

There’s nothing wrong with a pretty bunch of tulips or roses, but you know what’s even better? A floral creation that says that the gift-giver has taken the time to notice something singular about the recipient – whether it’s the fact that she adores succulents, that nothing makes her happier than the color blue…or that she just doesn’t have time in her life to deal with one single more thing, and that any plant that she’s given better be able to fend for itself.

Because isn’t that the point of Mother’s Day, really: to show all of the moms in our lives, whether it’s a mother in-law or good friend who just had a child, that it’s the little, unique things about them that we love the most?

So here’s a rundown of my favorite floral picks for this Mother’s Day.

beautiful orchid flower

For My Mom: My mom is nothing if not a live wire, so for her I chose a spectacular purple orchid and an orange guzmania bromeliad set into a beautiful Moroccan-style container. I love that vivid color combo, and the container is a gorgeous addition to her décor.

air plant macrame hanging

For My New Mama Friend: My friend Erin and I have a bit of a thing for ‘70s-style macramé plant hangers, so when I found this hanging air plant terrarium I knew I had to pick one up for her to celebrate her very first Mother’s Day. (And the fact that air plants require virtually no attention whatsoever makes them quite the excellent choice for a new mother.)

unique mother's day gift

For My Mother-In-Law: I wanted to get my mother-in-law something pretty and sweet that she could keep and enjoy over time, and chose two Canterbury bells plants set into a beautiful lace basket. It has a classic, elegant feel, but is still just a little unexpected (and the plants are easy to care for and last for a nice long while).
