Red Wine Deviled Eggs

We have a bit of a thing for deviled eggs in this family. And by "we" I mean "Kendrick," who apparently desires them with the fire of a thousand suns, because when they are made they are gone. Like, instantly.

And so, along with Rice Krispies treats (the man has simple tastes, what can I say?) deviled eggs are what I make him when I want to give him the edible equivalent of a hug.

And these? These are like the edible equivalent of…well, something that we don't need to lay out explicitly, because come on, it's not that kind of a site. They are SO rich, and SO good, and SO the kind of thing people are talking about when they say an hors d'oeuvre is a "conversation piece" (go on, serve these at a party; virtually everyone is going to give you a "oh my god what are you asking me to eat?!" look, and then they will eat them, and then they will be all eye rolls and "more please").

Potato Soup For The Soul

Yesterday it rained and rained and rained, and I turned on the space heaters and wore thick socks and held my little girl all day long, but it felt like no matter what, I couldn't get warm. And even though the Christmas tree lights stayed on all day and my little fake fireplace did its best to keep our living room feeling cheerful, I felt…sad. I started thinking about people I wish I could see more often, and people that I can't see anymore at all. And then I started thinking about my children growing up and moving out and how desperately I'll miss them, and then poof:

--> Sadness spiral.

The holiday season can do that to you sometimes.

And so when I picked up my son from school, I decided it would be a good day to do something special together. We dragged out the little ladder that he uses when he helps me cook and pulled it over next to the stove. I chopped potatoes and carrots and celery and he poured them all into the pot, and then we snuggled up on the couch and watched Christmas cartoons while the soup bubbled and the kitchen filled up with the smell of wonderful things.

Thanksgiving Side Dish: Citrusy Quinoa Salad With Pomegranates And Cranberries

I don’t typically pepper my diet with items that could be referred to as “superfoods.” I mean, I know I should, but I just…don’t. Because when I hear “healthy grain” what that translates to in my head is “cardboard.” And cardboard is not especially delicious.

But the thing about these superfoods – and quinoa, which is full of protein, fiber, iron, and lysine (essential for tissue growth and repair, making it a big skin-health booster) in particular – is that while they may not be something you’d want to eat a huge bowl of on their own, they’re excellent delivery systems for much more delicious things. My favorite additions: a citrusy vinaigrette and an assortment of fruits (antioxidant-rich pomegranate seeds and cranberries and vitamin C-filled orange) that are both good-tasting and good for you.

Bonus: this makes for a very, very pretty autumnal side dish, and an unexpected (and super-healthy) addition to your Thanksgiving table.

I'm STARVING.

I spent the end of my pregnancy in a state of total non-hunger (although this may sound odd, it's actually pretty common, being as a full-term baby doesn't leave a ton of space in your body for things like food)…but now?

I want to eat ALL THE THINGS.

Mostly all the ice cream things.
