Must-Have Glassware That You Might Not Have Thought Of

There are some glasses you “need”: sturdy water glasses, wine glasses, at least two champagne glasses just in case.

But there are also a handful of glasses that are just really nice to have…and that you may find you end up using more than your “regular” stuff.

First, everyone needs a really, really great mug that’s just their own (this is mine; Kendrick’s not allowed to use it because he has his own Best Dad mug). The mug doesn’t have to be expensive (mine was $4.99) and should probably be weird (or animal-covered; I also love my monkey mug) if at all possible; the only important thing is that you feel like it’s yours.

I also think that pretty, delicate juice glasses are a must-have: these gold-rimmed ones, which my aunt found for me at a flea market in Canada, are the glasses that I use more than any others. I drink grapefruit juice out of them every morning, serve wine in them, and use them as water glasses during parties to give the table a vintage-y, mismatched vibe.

These are actually Turkish tea glasses that came with tiny gold spoons, and they seem like the kind of thing that you’d buy on a whim and then never use…but I break them out all the time to serve things like fancy salts and dips (as an example, last time I made fish and chips I prettied up the plates by placing a glass filled with tartar sauce next to each portion). You can also use them to hold toothpicks or set them next to bowls of olives to hold the pits; they’re just perfect when you’re looking for something tiny, but still elegant.

And finally, I think everyone with children (and everyone, really) should own a set of stemless wine glasses. They vastly reduce the number of red wine-related accidents that take place, and can also be used around the home in lots and lots of neat ways (including to set out cutlery when you have guests over).
