Summer Scents For The Home (Plus DIY)

To celebrate summer, I would really like my home to smell like a salad.

I’m serious.

All about the fresh foodie scents lately.

Above, the best of the best (L to R): Archipelago Heirloom Vine candle, J.R. Watkins Orange Citrus room spray, Williams-Sonoma English Cucumber candle.

I also wouldn’t mind terribly if my home smelled like turquoise water and fresh coconut: I’ve already written about NEST’s Beach Soap Set, but how beautiful is that porcelain sea urchin-inspired reed diffuser?

And of course, you can always whip up a customized home scent of your very own.

DIY ROOM SPRAY

1. Sterilize a 24oz bottle (with a cap) with boiling water; let dry.

2. In the bottle, mix together about a teaspoon of essential oil (try lemongrass or orange for a light, summery scent) and 2oz of perfumer’s alcohol or high-proof vodka.

3. Fill the bottle with distilled water, put on the cap, and shake to emulsify. The water will separate over time, so shake before each use.

DIY REED DIFFUSER

You can also pour the essential oil directly into an old reed diffuser bottle (I save all of mine; they’re so pretty and come in handy for lots of stuff), pick up some bamboo skewers at the grocery store, and make your own reed diffuser at a fraction of the price of a store-bought one.

Add some twine to the neck if you like; that’s always pretty.
