What To Wear: When You’re In The Supporting Cast (But Want To Look Nice Anyway)

Q. Hi Jordan,

I’m a wedding photographer with clothing struggles. My husband [who works with me] usually rocks his hat and suspenders or a vest, while I’ve been in “fashion no-man’s land” in a business casual outfit. I need something that is comfortable, and still dressy enough to be worn to a wedding.

Please help!

Thank you,

Heather

A. Interesting question! And I think I know the perfect direction to steer you in: since it sounds like your husband’s attire has a retro vibe, try dresses with a slightly old-school feel and a little stretch to them in muted (but not boring-black) tones like plum and grey (L to R: Stella McCartney, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, J. Crew).

And really, you can’t go wrong with excellent tailoring and a boatneck. The silhouette of the Boden dress pictured above (which comes in navy and mustard; obviously don’t wear white to a wedding) is just about perfect, and looks lovely with a matching tailored jacket or contrasting 3/4 sleeve cardigan.

Hope that helps!

J
