How-To: Reverse Wing Eyeliner

Well, this is a new one.

The “Reverse Wing Liner” is inspired by the look shown on the models at the Nicholas K Spring 2015 runway show…and I like it. I’ve been getting more into the dark-undereye-liner thing over the past few months – it feels fun and rocker-y and sexy – but mostly I’ve been doing a smudgier, more imperfect look…so this is a cool, fresh twist. And it’s a) totally wearable, even during the day, provided you keep that line nice and thin(ish), and b) not nearly as tricky to do as it looks.

Let’s talk how-to:

  1. Since the focus of this look is the eyes, keep your other makeup to a minimum; I love contrast between dramatic eye makeup and a clean face (let those freckles show!). Apply Simple Skincare Nourishing 24 Hour Day/Night Cream to clean skin, then even out tone by applying a light foundation only where needed. Finish with a light dusting of rosy blush.
  2. Strong brows are a must for this look, so add definition by tweezing any strays and then applying brow pencil.
  3. Now, the eyes: start by applying a shadow in the same shade as your skin (I used the lightest shade from the NARSissist Smoky Eyes Kit) all over the lid and up towards the brow bone to create a clean palette. (For night, add drama by swapping in a pale gold shadow with some sparkle.)
  4. Next, use liquid eyeliner to draw a line from the inner corner of the eye along the lower lash line to the outer corner, extending it into a wing at either end. Start with a thin line – you can always add more liner to up the intensity of the look later.
  5. Use a small, flat shadow brush and some dark brown eyeshadow to trace the line you just created with the liquid eyeliner.
  6. Use a black kohl pencil to trace the inner waterline of both eyes, and to fill in any gaps.
  7. Finish with a few coats of black mascara and some pale matte lipstick (pictured here: NARS The Matte Multiple in Anguilla).
