My Looks

In The Quiet

A couple of years ago, my friend Stephen and I were hanging out on a cold winter day, complaining about the weather and how we didn’t want to go outside or do anything, really, except for stay right where we were on the couch, and he said, “You know what? Enough of this hating-winter stuff. We should make some hot chocolate.”

And that’s stuck with me ever since, because it instantly transformed the moment from “trapped in the house and bored” to “cozy and relaxed.” Instantly.

Fresh flowers on the table in the spring, picnics in the summer, pumpkin patches in the fall, hot chocolate and fireplaces in the winter…it’s so important to remember to consciously appreciate – and take advantage of – what’s so special about the right-this-moment.

That said, I’m the first to admit I do a LOT of whining when it’s cold out. I don’t know, maybe all those years in California thinned my blood. Or something. I just feel like winter comes with an awful lot of stuff that I’m not a huge fan of, like the absence of affordable fresh fruit and that sound that my car makes when I turn it on in the morning.

Except there’s something else that gets me whenever it snows, that takes me by surprise every single time:

it’s just so, so pretty.

Peaceful.

Silent.

It’s a good time to just be there, right where you are, in the quiet.
