Greater Lengths (And A Giveaway)

The fall is all about new beginnings, and nothing is more fun than heading to the salon for a big hairstyle change once the weather begins to turn (lowlights! a pixie cut! bangs! layers!)…but this year, I have something slightly less dramatic (in an immediate sense, anyway) in mind.

I’m growing it out.

I miss my long hair, and I think I’d like to go even longer than it was before.

And maybe – just maybe – I think I’d like to do something different with the color.

Now, serious question: would it be crazy to go darker? Dark hair hasn’t looked great on me in the past, but I think that’s because I went for dark-dark rather than a layered chestnut shade with lots of gold built in. Or should I just stick with the blonde spectrum? Tell me honestly. (In my dreams, I am Jessica Chastain-red, but I also recognize that that is an extremely poor idea.)

Anyway, even though growing out your hair may be slightly less dramatic than a major chop, it does require its own set of adjustments, mostly because while most hair experts say that you should really go for a trim every couple of months even when you’re growing your hair out…I don’t do that. Ever. If I make it to the salon for a cut three times a year, I’m lucky.

What that means for me: putting in extra effort to keep my hair healthy-looking while it reaches my goal length. I’ve talked before about my healthy-looking-hair routine, but really; when it comes down to it it’s about two things:

–       Minimizing heat styling;

–       Using the right products.

For extra moisture (both because of the growing-out-my-hair thing and because it’s winter and my house hovers around negative-one thousand percent humidity when the heat is on), I’m swapping in Dove Nourishing Oil Care Shampoo and Conditioner…which are probably my favorite shampoo and conditioner in the entire line anyway, so that’s nice. They contain rapid-absorbing natural almond oil and mineral oil and control frizz and replenish nutrients, and basically just make your hair look and feel deliciously soft.

Another use-every-day product: the Nourishing Oil Care Spray Detangler. I’m a broken record on how much I adore this product, but that’s because seriously: it’s phenomenal. I use it every single time I brush through my wet hair, and even spray it lightly onto my dry hair on the mornings that I don’t wash it to give it a little moisture boost.

Final step: in the wintertime my un-trimmed hair can start looking pretty dry, so I use a couple of drops of Dove Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum (which is infused with an Argan Oil blend) and on my ends to smooth them out and make them nice and shiny and a little bit piece-y.

I’d really like you guys to try these products for yourself, so I’m giving away a set of Nourishing Oil Care products (shampoo, conditioner, spray detangler and anti-frizz serum) to three Ramshackle Glam readers.

To enter, just comment below and tell me your fantasy autumn hair makeover (bright red color? A pixie cut? Long layers?). Or, if you prefer, do a girl a favor and weigh in on whether I should switch it up for the season :). Good luck!
