DIY Baby Lullaby Book

Fact #1: I cannot sing.

Fact #2: I love singing.

One of the things that I’m most excited about at the moment: I have this totally romanticized image in my head of sitting in a big, cozy chair late at night, after everyone else has gone to bed, and rocking the baby to sleep with some pretty songs. Because he won’t care that Mama can’t carry a tune.

But the other day I was thinking to myself: what lullabies do I know by heart?

And the answer is…none. Or…two? I know the mockingbird one up until about verse three, and then it comes to a screeching halt. And…Twinkle, Twinkle? But that’s about where I tap out.

But who wants to sing lullabies anyway? I’d much rather he grow up well-versed in Cat Stevens than This Little Piggy.

But there’s one more problem: I haaaate it when I can’t remember the lyrics to songs. Like, immediately-have-to-get-up-and-call-Google-into-action-hate-it. And as the whole point of singing lullabies (or so I hear) is to lull babies to sleep, I can imagine that popping up and down to check eLyrics every three minutes might put a damper on that plan.

I have such a little problem-solver planned for this one.

This week’s DIY Project: A Baby Lullaby Book. I picked a list of songs that I really like to sing and that I think will be relaxing to listen to (if not necessarily lyrically appropriate – sorta banking on that whole can’t-quite-understand-language-yet thing) and typed them out, then bound them into a book. It’ll sit right next to the rocker, waiting for those late-night song-requiring moments.

Eff Twinkle, Twinkle. Indy is going to know all the words to Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing by the time he’s three.
