Forty Years Ago, Somewhere In The Middle

They meet at a bar in New York: he’s managing the house band, she’s headed to Mexico on a road trip with some guy she’s dating. He sees her sitting on a barstool and tells her he’s going to marry her. She laughs.

Then the night ends, and she goes back home, to a faraway place you’ve never heard of.

Once the trip is over, she breaks up with the guy she’s dating. And she thinks of the man she met on the barstool.

So they start calling and writing, and eventually they decide to meet somewhere in the middle.

She takes a bus to a cloudy town on the coast, and they find a room with white curtains and a tiny bed.

He says, “We should get married this weekend. We should get married today.”

She says, “That’s a good idea.”

“And I have the perfect dress.”
