European Travel Wardrobe

Q. Hi Jordan!

So, I have been saving your outfits for awhile, and slowly gathering up the pieces to assemble them myself/improve my own! However, after seeing your awesome red dress post…I figure I’ll just ask for some advice!

I’m heading to Europe in a few weeks and I want to have as many outfits as possible (My best friend Jen and I start in London, head to Paris, Venice, Rome…etc etc) and I want to have as many outfits as possible. We also are sharing things (she has a great collection from Anthro and Madewell). We have a start, but I’m not sure what are the key pieces to bring? We’re gone for a little over 2 weeks!

Any travel outfit help would be awesome!!!

Juli

A. What a fun question! And wow, am I ever jealous – it doesn’t get better than a trip through Europe with your best friend.

Do not bring: anything that wrinkles, or very high heels (chic flats or a low, walkable heel will be fine for evening).

Do bring: stuff that layers well and fits well (nothing messy-looking). Also, bring less than you think (you can always pick up extra clothing if need be, but traveling lightly is much more fun).

TOPS

Pack a handful of casual tanks for everyday, plus a couple of light sweaters or cardigans (Forever 21 has a fantastic, affordable selection) that you can layer or change into for night. To maximize your wardrobe, go for muted tones and stripes (chic, fun, and an easy way to make a casual outfit more stylish). You can always add splashes of color with accessories (but don’t bring too many of these! You’ll pick up tons of amazing things on your travels). Above: Madewell tank; all other tops Forever 21.

BOTTOMS

For bottoms, I’d bring a couple of pairs of twill shorts (avoid denim, and go for tailored styles rather than cutoffs) in varying colors for daytime (try navy, red, and olive green), plus a long skirt or a pair of loose cotton pants in a light color in case you go somewhere during the day that isn’t shorts-appropriate (like the churches in Rome, where you’ll also need to cover your shoulders with a light sweater or scarf). From left: Urban Outfitters ($54); Madewell ($38); Madewell ($90); Madewell ($65); Joie ($125).

DRESSES

A couple of easy cotton dresses should cover you for nighttime, especially when mixed into the other pieces you’re bringing. Since dress codes vary by country, I’d skip anything too skimpy; go for one just-above-the-knee dress, and maybe one light, comfortable maxi (of course, you can also wear these dresses during the day). Anthro does light summer dresses better than anyone, but Forever 21 and H&M also make extremely packable summer things. Above: all Anthropologie.

SHOES

You know I love my heels, but European travel calls for chic, comfortable flats. Clockwise from left: Joie ($195); TopShop ($60); Luxury Rebel ($100); Ciao Bella ($50); Seychelles ($80).

ACCESSORIES

Like I said, don’t bring too much – save room for souvenirs. Do bring a pretty, colorful scarf that can be used as a wrap at night, and a cute, crushable hat (Hat Attack has good options) to protect your face from the sun. And you’ll want a great bag in addition to your luggage – click here for my favorite summer handbag finds.

Have fun!

J
