Baby

Born Free Event / Museum Of Natural History

I love this picture.

I mean…I’m sorry, how uncomfortable do I look?

“Oh, hi there, Kelly Rutherford from Gossip Girl. Let’s just stand in front of this step-and-repeat and smile. I’m just going to…put my arm around your waist…no, that’s weird…let me just hold my hand awkwardly in the air three inches behind your lower back. Cheese!”

Always a very natural situation.

And my shirt was see-through.

All kidding aside, Kelly was a very sweet woman (we chatted about NYC schools for a bit after this photo was taken), and I was pretty psyched to get invited to the Born Free event yesterday because a) it was a luncheon at the Museum of Natural History, and how fancy does that sound? and b) my first baby-related event! Whee.

Have to say, got a little panicky during the lunch presentation when Dr. Greene started describing colic using words like “piercing,” “severe distress,” three hours per day,” and “more like a scream.” Apparently this is a fairly common thing for babies to suffer from, and the point of the Born Free bottles – besides being recyclable (recycling containers will be popping up in Babies ‘R’ Uses nationwide shortly) – is to reduce colic symptoms by promoting active feeding (the babies have to work at getting milk, the same way they do during breastfeeding) and minimizing air passage into the stomach. They’re also great when it comes to stuff like B.P.A.s, which even I know to avoid in anything baby-related. I hear that bottles are a fairly personal preference, but I’m more than happy to give these a spin seven or so months from now.

Ooh – one more thing.

At the luncheon, I ate this:

Whoa.

And it’s nowhere near as complicated as it looks: just top fresh berries with a meringue and add a swirl of lemon whipped cream (beat a little lemon zest and lemon juice into the whipping cream and sugar you’d traditionally beat together for ordinary whipped cream). Garnish with a cookie and a bit of candied lemon.
