Lunch at Landmarc

Yesterday, I met up with Alejandra (from Always Order Dessert, below center), NY Mag photographer Melissa (left), and publicist Donnetta (from Campbell Publicity) at Landmarc, in the Time Warner Center, for a little pow-wowing. I’ve never eaten there before – only been for drinks once, a couple of years ago – but the menu was pretty spectacular, if maybe a little dramatic for lunch (think roasted marrow bones with orange marmalade, orecchiette alla norcina, and smoked duck and fontina tarte flambe).

The best part of the entire meal? We declined dessert, but the waiter brought us over a big, complimentary bowl of green-apple cotton candy anyway. Too fun.

Since I had a for-real photographer sitting directly across the table from me, I decided to pick Melissa’s brain for some food photography help. As I’ve learned, it’s best to use natural light whenever possible, but the lighting was too low to get a shot of my croque madame (ham and cheese on country bread, topped with a fried egg). The flash, of course, blew out the photo completely (that would be the one on the top). Enter Melissa, who suggested that I use the flash, but back up from the food and then zoom in before taking the shot. I used that technique to take the shot on the bottom, and…better, no?
