Made For Walking

Truth: I didn't think that thigh-high boots were something that I'd be able to wear.

Or at least not something I'd be able to wear and pull off.

I mean, I live in a semi-woodsy section of the suburbs. I have a two-year-old with whom I do two-year-old things like go to Storytime at the children's library. Thigh-high boots? Hm.

But let's be honest: the fact that an item of clothing is perhaps vaguely inappropriate for a given set of circumstances isn't something that's ever stopped me before. And in Kate Moss's video campaign for Stuart Weitzman (which I saw at the premiere party that I went to last week, and then also saw again once I got home because it's awesome enough to watch twice), she...

Dry Skin Tips For The Similarly Afflicted

In the summer my skin is respectably non-flaky, but in the colder months it’s all alligator, all the time. What this means: a major focus on moisturizer – once September hits, I always moisturize at least twice a day (usually more), and sometimes even use my richer nighttime moisturizer in the morning (making sure that I then also layer on a product like BB cream for sun protection).

1. Start dealing with dryness before it starts: don’t wait until major flaking sets in before implementing your winter skincare routine.

Welcome To The New Ramshackle Glam!

Hi! I'm so excited about this.

This redesign (featuring a beautiful new logo by Naava) has been in the works for a few months now, and I'm so thrilled with how it turned out - I hope you enjoy it! The overall goal was to make RG more easy to navigate and fun to visit, so these are the big changes you'll see:

- A "slider" with five featured posts - either a handful of my favorite posts from the past few weeks that I think you might enjoy or topical content (e.g. Halloween-related posts during Halloween week);

Torn T-Shirts And Twinsies

My friend Francesca (that's us in Vegas last spring) is the most fashionable person I know, and I don't mean that in an fancy-purses-and-snobby-labels way: I mean she's just one of those people who's naturally about ten steps ahead of the trends and can wear things like cut-up men's undershirts and somehow make them look like couture, and she inspires my own clothing experiments more than anyone else.

Oh my god, did we ever have fun when we lived together in L.A. We basically shared a wardrobe: she'd borrow one of my Trovata cat-princess dresses and I'd put on some beaded sheath that she'd found at a thrift store in Italy, and we'd head out to play darts until two in the morning before coming back home and jumping into the pool. I've never had that experience before - where you're so close with someone that your possessions become more or less shared - but that's exactly the way it was: even Lucy felt more like "our" dog than "mine".

Anyway, Francesca is very much my Fashion Spirit Sister, so when she emailed me that she was on the hunt for a perfectly distressed rocker tee (we email and/or text each other about ten times a day, so things like "I'm on the hunt for a perfectly distressed rocker tee" are totally acceptable topics, in addition to "Miley Cyrus is completely naked in her new video" and just how much Marvin is crying on this season of ANTM), I thought: ooh. That sounds good.

Click Your Heels Three Times

For Part II of our date night in the city I wore my favorite silhouette of the moment: a partially-tucked-in tank (literally, every single time I do this Kendrick says "What are you doing to your shirt?" to which I reply, of course, "It's FASHUN, darrrrling") with mid-rise jeans, a belt and heels. It looks kinda like I'm wearing overalls, no? I'm fine with that.

Ooh, those heels, I love them so. I've been mooning over these silver Jimmy Choos all summer, but this pair was $39.99 (and have a neat faux-wood heel), and $39.99<$650, so there you go. Also, for some reason they make me think of The Wizard of Oz, despite the fact that they are neither red nor bedazzled.

P.S. That is some serious post-rock-climbing hair, right there. I knew I wanted to take photos of this outfit and actually brought my curling iron to Chelsea Piers with me like a vain little unicorn, but an hour of exercise + no visible outlets + no mirror = my very special patented brand of curlybangs and a bun.

RG Reader Shopping Spree At T.J.Maxx

It’s always exciting when I get to meet someone who reads Ramshackle Glam in real life: in the playground, at a restaurant, walking down the street. But never before have I had the opportunity to not just meet a reader…but to spend an entire morning hanging out with her, combing through the racks in search of a whole new fall wardrobe for her to bring home. So much fun.

Last week, I met up with Katie (the winner of my personal styling contest) at the midtown T.J.Maxx, and together we created three looks that both encapsulated her unique style and incorporated some of this fall's top designer trends.

Behind The Scenes: T.J.Maxx Fall Shoot

Yesterday was a long one: the team from T.J.Maxx (we're talking two enormous trucks, three vans, two craft service tables, a videographer, a photographer, and about twenty additional people) arrived at my place at 7:30AM and stayed until nearly sunset...but we got so much great stuff shot.

The breakfast table set up on my front porch was pretty spectacular (especially those green things - we'll talk about those in a bit).

Summer’s not over yet…but around this time of year I start getting excited about bringing my favorite autumn pieces back into rotation. As soon as it’s even close to cool enough outside, I start swapping out jeans for shorts and light sweaters for tanks, and breaking out pieces that I’ve been waiting to wear all summer long: a knit shawl, a pair of motorcycle boots, an incredible leather jacket.

Speaking of incredible leather jackets: look at this.

It’s a high-end designer piece from T.J.Maxx, and is both spectacular (as you can see) and lightweight enough to wear when there’s just the slightest chill in the air. I love the versatility of this jacket; it helps me express whatever mood (and season) I’m in, from showing off my biker-chick roots to adding a little edge to a Date Night dress.

One Dress, Three Different Personas

To me, what qualifies something as a “really great find” isn’t just how it looks or makes me feel…it’s how it allows me to express myself.  My mood doesn’t necessarily stay the same from day to day; it can run the gamut from “confident” to “romantic” to “relaxed” based on what’s going on in my head and on my schedule. A study by T.J.Maxx found that many other women out there feel the same: nearly 3 out of 4 women agree that they dress to fit their mood.

Some pieces – like this bright designer dress I found at T.J.Maxx – do it all and can easily fit into different scenarios in my everyday life.

Initially, I didn’t think of this dress as particularly versatile; I sort of categorized it as “cocktail party” or “bridal/baby shower” attire. But I like the shape so much that I kind of want to wear it everywhere...so I started playing around with accessories (all in wearable shades of black, white and tan) and discovered that with just a few little tweaks this dress can go from work to date night to Saturday brunch, and the possibilities for me to express my personal style are endless.
