In The Real World

via A Beautiful Mess

Blogger homes really stress me out.

They're all fiddle leaf figs in adorable woven pots and white carpets that my dogs would destroy instantly and lamps that I can't afford and perfectly arranged gallery walls of expensively framed prints that look like they were collected during a succession of impossibly glamorous round-the-world trips.

In The Kid Room

Our son's room when we first moved in (the floors and paint had already been done by a Thumbtack pro; more info on those here).

There's something so special about the room you have when you're a kid. No matter what it looks like - whether it's bare-bones, whether it's fancy, whether it's neat or messy or whatever - you love it, because it's yours. You know every single corner of it; lay awake at night wrapped up in elaborate fantasies about the picture hanging on that wall or the stuffed animals sitting on the chair in the corner.

It's alive in a way that I don't know any room later in life ever is.

We Have Light! (Video)

When you buy a house without ever having actually seen it in person, it's reasonable to expect a few little surprises to come your way...and yup: on our first night in our new place, I discovered something pretty unexpected.

There was no light.

Like, none.

…And Here We Are (Video)

We're heeeeeere! We're here we're here we're here.

I went a little MIA for the past three days because...well, because "busy" is a little bit of an understatement, but also because I didn't have Internet. But now I do, whee. So I'm back! Hi.

I love it here.

A Safe (And Beautiful) Way To Block Out Bedroom Light

When we moved into our new house, our son finally (finally!) started sleeping through the night. And it was wonderful. Like, THE BEST THING EVER.

And then summer came along, and it stopped being wonderful, because guess what happened every morning around 5:30AM? The sun got up, and our son got up right along with it.

So we decided that something needed to be done, and installed blinds. Except they only dimmed the room; they didn’t actually darken it. We looked at traditional blackout curtains, but they were way too dorm-room-y for my taste. We ultimately decided on thick, dark-grey curtains, and those work – our son now sleeps past sunrise even in the summertime…but now we have Child Number Two in the house, and for our daughter’s bright, feminine, minty nursery, heavy, almost-black drapes just weren’t going to fly.

I wanted to keep it feeling light in there…but still wanted to be able to turn off the sun when a midday nap was in session.

Mini Bathroom Makeover: Five Small Changes That Make A Big Difference

This post is sponsored by the Home Depot.

When I painted my bathroom a few months ago, I wasn’t especially thrilled with the results. The two-tone grey walls were pretty, but felt…blah. So I presented myself with a little challenge: find a handful of quick, easy (and affordable) ways to update my bathroom and add the personality and touch of luxury it needed.

Before And After: Patio

I know: it's a sorry, sorry sight.

But honestly: I had no idea what to do with this space, to the point where it sat unused (and apparently unswept) for nearly a year.

Having a yard was already much too much outdoor space for me to wrap my little New York City girl mind around; I couldn't handle the additional challenge of figuring out what to do with a patio, as well. First of all, it was attached to my office - a room that we barely use anyways - so I frequently forgot it even existed. And second, I couldn't imagine why I'd sit there as opposed to...well, anywhere else. If we wanted to eat dinner outdoors, we'd probably sit at the big table in the yard, right?. And if we wanted to lounge around outside...well, we own a fire pit.
