Color Me…Different

I’ve never, ever in my life colored my hair at home. (Well, other than a momentary dalliance with lemon juice in the eighth grade, which we won’t count because it did exactly nothing.) But I think I’d like to try it.

I’m obviously in a bit of a switch-it-up mood, but guess how long my red-streaks experiment (above) lasted? About five minutes. I didn’t know salon color could wash out (or at least I didn’t know it could happen that quickly), but apparently it did. And so what all that amounted to was a very expensive two-week dalliance with the shade.

I’d like to try doing something different with my hair, but am in the mood to a) spend a little (or a lot) less than usual, because it’s the holidays and my money is in a steady outgoing stream at the moment, and b) try something new, both in terms of look and technique. Basically…I’m in the mood to have a little fun.

But the problem with home hair-coloring – or at least as I understand it – is that you sort of just slap on the color, which results in a flat, dull overall effect. Conversely, in-salon hair color is great because technicians tailor their approach to the needs of various parts of the hair. Last time I was in the salon I asked my colorist why professional color is so much better, and the secret is apparently that they treat roots and lengths differently in order to achieve a natural effect, with lots of different depths and tones (because the lengths of hair are porous, they absorb color much more readily). And I would very much like this rich, natural effect as opposed to…well, the opposite. What would be ideal would be if there were a way to use at-home color to treat lengths and roots separately, like in salons.

Easy (And Weatherproof) Braided Updo

You know those milkmaid-type hairdos you always see celebrities wearing on red carpets with ball gowns, and the look is both odd and oddly cute? I always liked the fancy outfit/slightly disheveled braids dichotomy, but it also always seemed…kind of like a pain.

But with the humid weather on its way, a braided updo is quite the little problem-solver, and so I cobbled together this look, with low side braids that are sweet and casual without being too twee - it's a 'do that's both simple and completely weatherproof, and that works for everything from a wedding (maybe not your own, though) to a day at the beach.

How-To: Boho Braids

When warm weather arrives, so do The Braids. Seriously: there is no easier solution for a running-around-town style…and adding a little sparkle means the look can go from day to night, as well.

P.S. Not a huge fan of the word "boho"…but this look kind of is. Boho. So what can you do?

Bring Your Waves Out Of Hibernation

What I brought home from Florida: a very mild tan (I managed to not get sunburned for perhaps the first time in my life, which meant that I hid out under an umbrella a lot and also managed to not get that tan, but I suppose that's good too), a lion-shaped pool toy, some phenomenal chocolate-coconut things, and a renewed appreciation for completely (or…ok…mostly) au naturale hair.

Us on spring break.

See? That’s how I wore it most days that we were there: loose and curly and styling-tool free. And I had so much fun experimenting with different ways to wear my crazy waves while on vacation (pinned up! with a silk scarf! side-braided!) that I decided I wanted to take them home with me. Not for all the time – I still obviously love my curling iron – but an easier, more natural look is a fun new option to have in my repertoire for spring.

Giveaway: Must-Have Styling Tool

Click over to my Facebook page to enter to win one of my all-time favorite styling tools, Theorie's SAGA Collection Flat Iron ($175 value).

P.S. Don't worry about the "follow the link to enter to win" thing; it may look kinda spammy, but that's the new "legal" way to hold giveaways on Facebook, as opposed to just asking you guys to comment under a post. It also makes it much easier for me to make sure that I'll be able to get in touch with the winner.

Get Your Own Great Hair Day Every Day

I used to be fairly fickle when it came to my hair-care products: if I was in need of shampoo or conditioner and saw a bottle that looked pretty (or smelled good) on a drugstore shelf, chances are it was coming home with me. I think it’s safe to say that over the years I tried nearly every major brand on the market…and, honestly? I was rarely crazy about the results; my hair was always on my list of least-favorite attributes. But I figured, you know…it was probably my hair that was the issue, not the products I was using. How big of a difference could a shampoo make?

A big one. Using a shampoo and conditioner that you chose because it’s the right one for your hair type – not because the bottle is purple and you’re into purple that day – is a major way to get your locks under control and looking great.

At the beginning of the summer Dove sent over some Daily Moisture Shampoo  and Conditioner*, and now that we’re smack in the middle of August I can officially say that never in my life has my hair been as manageable and healthy-looking as it is these days. (My bangs are still weird when it’s especially humid out, but you can chalk that up to my insistence on maintaining an extremely non-monsoon-weather-friendly hairstyle.)

How To Wash Your Hair (The Right Way)

I know, I know...how to wash your hair? Uhhh...with water? But the fact is that there are a few simple things that you can do to take your morning routine to the next level, leaving you with more manageable hair than ever.

While we're on the topic: last night I hosted a Hair Love 101 Twitter Party, and the most-asked question was how to handle your hair when it's crazy hot and humid out. That's my big issue, too: my hair frizzes easily, and bangs (I'm growing mine out for the fall) and humidity do not mix. My solution: to keep my hair as generally healthy as possible (because I've found that the healthier my hair is, the better it looks in its natural state), and then to work with it rather than against it, applying frizz-fighting products (my favorite is Dove Style+Care Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum*) and then letting it do as it will.

How To Fall Back In Love With Your Hair

I’ll be honest: I haven’t always been crazy about my hair. It’s a kind of tricky mix of straight and wavy, has on occasion (the Los Angeles Years) been subjected to so much bleaching that it turned straw-like on the ends, and morphs into an actual lion’s mane the second it comes into contact with even a whisper of humidity. From time to time in the past, I even resorted to fairly extreme measures (including extremely ill-advised clip-on hair extensions and chemical straightening treatments) to try and wrest it into submission.

For years and years, whether or not my hair was healthy wasn’t a topic I gave a ton of thought to. I honestly didn’t think it really mattered; I figured my hair was my hair, and it wasn’t ever going to be anything other than “eh”, and that was that. It was only about a year ago that I started realizing that how my hair feels (and looks) is completely within my control – I just needed to start caring for it, and treating it like what it was: a part of my body. I made a few changes to my routine – using gentle products tailored to my hair type, minimizing heat styling, and generally working with (rather than against) my hair’s natural texture – and my hair started transforming from something that I fought with into something that I embrace…and actually kind of love.

I just cut off about five inches – spring felt like a good time to start from scratch – and my hair feels healthier and lighter now than it has in ages. As a great bonus, it’s worlds easier to style: I took the picture above immediately after using Dove’s Daily Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner* and spending a few minutes in the company of a 1” barrel curling iron – no additional products needed at all. It turns out that it’s true: healthy-looking hair is beautiful hair, period.
