My absolute favorite/least favorite thing about my job doing marketing for Malibu’s mobile home parks: The fact that I spend every day looking at houses that I would very much like to own, but do not.
Case in point: This house, which actually made me gasp the first time I stepped foot inside. The view! The ridiculously perfect styling! The walk-in closet of my actual dreams!
What sold you on the concept of owning a mobile home?
Before getting into the TV and movie biz, I worked as a builder and interior designer. I just love houses, and when – through a great friend who lives in Point Dume – I discovered this place, I knew we had to buy here. I looked for three years at every ‘For Sale’ in Point Dume until I found Bungalow 156 and was blown away.
After seeing a few dodgy homes (meaning ‘ready to haul away’) I was instantly in love with 156: The mechanicals, the heavy-duty copper plumbing, the absolute top-level electrical systems, the steam showers, the heated tile floors, the electric skylights, the custom cabinetry, the outdoor shower, the Sub-Zero kitchen, the jetted tub…everything about the place was top drawer. It has such a solid and thoughtful build-out, better than anything I’d seen here before. To get a house with this finish level I would have to go down on the sand…and, oh, come up with another 5 million bucks!
What was this house like when you bought it? What were the main updates you made?
This home was such a star: The cul-de-sac private location, the windless deck with awe-inspiring views, the privacy, the master suite with a writer’s desk perching you over the Pacific. We needed to take the very good bones of the house and notch it up to the next level, addressing deferred maintenance, removing certain built-ins and changing the footprint of others, restoring the siding, upgrading all of the interior trim and doors, sanding down every wood floor and replacing tile, lighting fixtures and plumbing fixtures and hardware. It’s hard to have painters and carpenters underfoot for two long months, but that’s what it took to refinish every surface – and the end result is so worth it.
Your style is impeccable. How would you describe it?
We definitely wanted to curate an easy, comfortable beach house that was inviting, fun and wonderful to the eye. We went for rich textures, bold furnishings, and a palette that compliments the bright blue Pacific filling every French door and window.
I’m fairly new to Malibu. What are some of your favorite local spots?
Since settling into the Bu we’ve fallen in LOVE with Lilly’s, the Vintage Grocers, and all the shops and people nearby. It’s also super easy to ring Spruzzo’s for fast delivery of the most delicious food around. But the greatest part of Point Dume – aside from having a scotch by one of the fireplaces in Bunglow 156 – is taking the dogs down for a morning beach stroll, sometimes hardly seeing another person…definitely Malibu at its best!
