The “Santa Won The Lottery” Gift Guide

Sometimes you gotta go big or go home.

For this list, I asked a few editors, authors, friends, and assorted very cool people to tell me what they’d ask Santa for if Santa had recently come into a very large and unexpected inheritance and/or won a class-action lawsuit.

(The number of people who asked for an escape hatch of some sort – a.k.a. a time-travel machine or an island in the middle of the ocean – was spectacular, if not surprising.)

Ulla Johnson Shearling Coat

It just turned cold in New York and it depressed the hell out of me to put on the same dowdy puffer again for the fourth year in a row. So I started looking at coats I would actually be excited to wear every frigid winter morning. Unfortunately my dream coats are super duper out of my price range. But maybe if I win the lottery before Christmas and/or come into an unexpected inheritance and/or get hit by a zamboni and sue for major damages, I can buy this Ulla Johnson shearling coat with a chic side zipper. It’s luxe and a little bohemian and ever-so-slightly muppety.

Coffee Table Stash Box

My general approach to home decor is to buy things I love, and then figure out where to put them after the fact. Which is to say: I’m firmly in the “form over function” camp. That may explain why I’ve been so stumped in my search for a “stash kit” that works with the rest of my apartment. This coffee table box by Chen Chen and Kai Williams, however, checks all the boxes: it’s stunning (I love the look and visual texture of their “terrazzo” resin), special (each lid is one-of-a-kind!), and exactly the type of thing I’d feel comfortable having out in my living room.

Vintage Fireplace

If money were no object, I would definitely have this hanging fireplace on my holiday list! Vintage fireplaces like this are hard to come by, but the folks at Surfing Cowboys in Los Angeles are pros at finding them. Vintage fireplaces immediately add character to any space, and I love that this one comes from the Hollywood Hills.

Roombas (and Trips)

A Roomba because I hate cleaning. Also a trip to Europe with my husband (a childless trip!). I want to be lazy and drink fancy coffees all day and wander around museums and do literally whatever I feel like doing. My day-to-day involves 15 minutes of free personal time per day, so whatever helps me get more of that is what I want. Maybe a meditation retreat in the mountains? (Think Canyon Ranch, not hippie ashram).

All the diptyque Candles

This is probably cliche at this point in terms of luxe items, but for good reason. Last year my mom got me a sampler diptyque candle set, and I truly loved it. The box was so beautiful I displayed it in my kitchen, and I enjoyed the process of trying out the different candles and picking my favorites (Jasmine and Noisetier, if you’re wondering.) My only complaint is that each of the candles was so small…so if I could just get one of every single diptyque candle (full-sized), that would be cool. Thanks, Santa!

Huge Trunk Of Candy

Cashmere pajamas and those amazing slippers that also turn into shoes. Also, a giant tin of Garrett’s Popcorn and gourmet fancy candies from Sugarfina (LOOK at this trunk o’candy!).

Teleportation Device

I would LOVE a travel machine – so I could zip around to visit friends and family in London and Asia (without hours on an airplane). I’d also LOVE the machine to duplicate myself, so I could be in two places at once.

Tricked-Out Office

An organizational guru genius to customize my studio with places for all papers, orders, supplies, flowers and letters because I’m a HOT mess. Also, motivators cheering me on like “you can do this…you got this girl….craft your awesomeness!” Oh, and for the studio to be all things rose gold.

Alexandrite Ring

I would buy an island in Greece, to get away from my messy house.

But if I need to pick something tangible, of course it would be jewelry. I have a deep love of alexandrite and would for sure buy a large ring with the stone.

Farmhouse Sink

A new kitchen – totally upgraded with a farmhouse sink in front of the window instead of in the corner!

Dyson Hair Dryer

I never spend money on “grooming.” I own a shitty dryer I’ve had for over a decade. (Seriously, I think it’s one blow-dry away from electrocuting me.) I never get manicures, waxes, or spa treatments, or pay attention to all the fun products that now exist. I get my hair colored once a year and mainly wear it in a high bun. So, it would be nice to have something a little indulgent that would make me not look like a cave lady who lives in pajamas in front of her computer, all day everyday.

Fire Pit

All I want is to make my house the most enticing location ever so that everyone comes to me and I never ever ever ever ever have to leave, like ever. A fancy outdoor fireplace-coffee table thing would be super useful in this endeavor.
