Light Me Up

Now that’s a good globe.

I promise, I’m not turning into Young House Love, Ramshackle Edition over here; I just literally have been doing nothing but working on our place for the past week, so…well, talking about home decor is what I’ve got.

The present object of my obsession: lighting. I’m working on a full remodel of the lighting situation in our house (by which I mean I having lights as opposed to having literally none and living in near-total darkness, because that’s what was going on before). I’m shooting a before-and-after video so you can see the full extent of what we’re doing, but in the meantime we need to talk about lighting fixtures.

First, pendants. What seems to be the major trend now is industrial-style cage lighting…which I like, but right now I’m more into simple clear glass and all things brass and ’50s-ish.

Goodness these are pretty.

And now let’s look at flushmounts. This was a new word to me; it refers to those lights that you typically see in kitchens that lie flat against the ceiling. In a lot of 1960s and ’70s ranch houses these lights are pretty unattractive – just big fluorescent panels – so switching them out is a really nice way to add instant style for not all that much money (they can be expensive, of course, but they certainly don’t have to be).

Also, I found the below guide on Pinterest, and it’s super useful. Lighting video coming up soon!
