Cold Spring Day Trip

I’ve written about Cold Spring a whole bunch, but that’s because every single time I go I’m reminded just how much I love it. It’s just such a…gem. (I’m aware I sound like a grandma, but a gem is exactly what it is.) Cool little antique stores selling stuff you actually want to buy (albeit slightly overpriced, but you can always score a “Mystery Bag” for $5 if you’re feeling adventurous), artisanal finds for the home, fun little shops for kids, and THE BEST STEAK SANDWICH ON THE PLANET (I mean that). And if you don’t have a car, Cold Spring is just a little over an hour away from NYC via the Metronorth.

(I hear there’s also hiking and outdoorsy-type stuff, but I’ve never partaken personally because Do Not Hike, so if that’s your thing click here for more info.)

A suggested itinerary for you:

1. Start with breakfast at The Foundry Cafe (homemade muffins, great breakfast specials, and awesome coffee).

2. Walk along Main Street, stopping into as many antique stores as you can handle (I tend to get lucky with jewelry and lamps, but last weekend found a mirrored hatrack thing with HORNS that I feel fairly certain was a mistake to not buy).

3. Stop into Go Go Pops for weirdly delicious flavor combos (try avocado kiwi, chocolate cherry, or – if you’re feeling especially adventurous – cucumber chili).

4. Refuel with a beer and some jukebox action at McGuire’s.

5. Pick up a locally made room diffuser or candle (I love the Vanilla Wood scent) at the Cold Spring Apothecary.

7. Browse Archipelago Home for gifts and gorgeous home accessories.

8. Before you get on the train to go home, make sure to leave time for dinner at the Cold Spring Depot, where you will eat a steak sandwich. (This part isn’t a “suggestion,” it’s a directive.)

I’m not sure who was more excited about the vintage cuff bracelets I found.

This is the steak sandwich at the Depot. You must eat it.

Oh, those pesky two-foot-tall paparazzi. They just follow us everywhere.

Go in the summer, go in the winter. It’s always beautiful.
