My Looks

At Minimum

I have discovered something unexpected.

My whole life, whenever I’ve worn “fancy” stuff, I’ve felt…awkward. Like a little girl playing dress-up in her mom’s closet. What I mean by “fancy” is mostly things like…I don’t know, skirt suits. Tailored pieces. But I also mean those sort of elegantly minimalist outfits that I absolutely love on other people, but that never look quite right on me.

And I figured it out:

It was because of my hair. (I know, I know: myhairmyhairmyhairmyhair; whatever, I’m excited.)

Because all that length and curls and girliness was just so much that I felt like I needed to balance it out with super-casual pieces: t-shirts and jeans and such. And now that my hair is super-casual – it feels besides the point, almost – all those minimalist, structured pieces are exactly what I want to wear. It is so exciting, mostly because my desire to wear stuff that does not presently exist in my closet coincided exactly with an absolutely enormous sale at Zara (we’re talking in the realm of, like, $12 for just about everything; it was as much of a madhouse in there as you’d imagine).

Which is all to say: allow me to introduce you to my New Favorite Thing In My Wardrobe (pictured during our trip to visit Francesca’s family over the weekend): a pair of silky…

elegant…

minimalist…

overalls.

Go figure.
