Big Boy Beds & Not-So-Bad Ikea Trips

Kendrick and I have been getting along pretty well today, so we thought we’d take a quick trip to #ikea to even things out.

It wasn’t that bad!

I mean, it was bad – not gonna lie – but not that bad. Certainly not as bad as last time, mostly because for these reasons:

1. We both started and ended the trip with a stop at the Ikea cafeteria, and: meatballs;

2. We were extremely goal-oriented – into the toddler bed area and right back out again (I managed to suppress my desire to just check out the marketplace “for a second”);

3. Our selection was small and light enough to easily transport from store->car and from car->house. Meaning we didn’t arrive in the self-serve warehouse only to discover that we were trying to buy boxes three times the size of our car (if you are buying anything excessively heavy and/or extremely complicated to assemble, I am a firm believer in The Power Of Paying The Store To Do It).

4. The line to pay was short, the ride home was relatively smooth, and the first thing that happened after we walked through our front door and deposited the packages in the hallway was that I ate strawberries, so that was good, too.

The bad part actually happened the next day, when we started assembling our son’s new bed only to discover that while Ikea specified that the bed would come in two packages, they forgot to mention that the part of the bed that transforms it from a wooden hole into something that you can actually lie on (a.k.a. the slats) is sold separately, for no especially good reason that I can discern other than to make me cry. Which I did, partially because I thought that our marriage wouldn’t be able to sustain two trips to Ikea in two days and partially because I had just spent the morning in the seventh circle of hell that is talking to a customer service representative for a major department store about a problem with my bill.

We did drive all the way back to Ikea for the slats, though…except strangely enough the store was pitch-black, and the parking lot was completely empty. And sure, I suppose I should have checked store hours before I left, but it honestly never occurred to me that Ikea – a place really best visited with a buddy to facilitate the transportation of the aforementioned car-sized boxes – would be closed during one of the two days every week when said buddy might not have to go to work.

Anyway, no big boy bed yet.

Soon, though! The slats are coming soon. I’m excited to show you; it’s really cute (the overall bed, not the slats).

Semi-related: goodness, does Ikea ever have cute stuff for kids. Such as:
