What To Wear: Boyfriend’s Graduation Ceremony

Q. Hey Jordan!

My boyfriend’s medical school graduation is coming up in May in Miami and I’m so excited…but I have NO clue what to wear. Since I’m going as a guest of the family, I want to be respectful and of course look good in pictures, but I also know that Miami…in May…can make that tricky.

Help?

A. For a graduation ceremony, the key is to look classic and pulled together without wearing anything that draws too much attention away from the real stars of the show: the graduates. I’d skip white, red, and anything too poufy or princess-y in favor of a sleek, timeless silhouette that’s feminine without showing too much skin. And of course you’ll want something fairly lightweight because of the whole Miami thing, so go for a just-above-the-knee cut in a fabric that won’t wrinkle up in the humidity. I personally like a 3/4 sleeve, but if you go for a relatively conservative cut like a boatneck or a not-too-low V-neck you should be fine going sleeveless.

In fact, I have the perfect dress for you: a Trina Turk that I wore at this morning’s Better TV/Better Homes & Gardens shoot (pictured above). And as a bonus, it’s from Rent the Runway, so it’ll only cost you $65. Try pairing it with black and rose gold accents for a look that’s sweet…but still sophisticated.
