Wedges You Can Actually Walk In

Q. I need wedges that aren’t too high for a trip to the Turks & Caicos with an 18-month-old…a.k.a practical yet cute. Ideas?

A. I hear you.

You know, I’ve always been a major heel girl. When I was in my early twenties, I used to make my mom crazy because I would insist on wearing five-inch stilettos during all-day shopping trips in the city that involved miles and miles of walking, and she could not understand why in the world I would want to do this. I can’t answer that for you. And once, I remember sending my aunt Trudy into a total panic because we went on a day trip to some town in Southern California with cobblestone-paved streets, and I wore these enormous lace-up platform things, and instead of walking from store to store I basically rolled. (Honestly, you’ve never seen a sober person fall that many times in a row. I say that with total certainty.)

I don’t do that anymore.

I totally wore heels all the way through my pregnancy (and even got in an online rumble or two about it)…but once that baby arrived…

Done.

I mean, I still wear heels, obviously…but now they’re usually a whole bunch lower, and on a day-to-day basis: flats.

And sure, when I was living in the city a lot of it was about safety – I was already stressed about carrying an infant, assorted bags, and two extremely stubborn dogs up and down four flights of stairs, and adding a heel of any sort to the mix would have been an incredibly bad idea for reasons that have been extensively covered on this site – but  a lot of it was also that…I mean, they hurt. And they didn’t used to.

I don’t know what happened. I was sort of bummed about it at first, but then I realized that flats can be very cute, and – oh, right – you can actually walk in them. Far distances. Which is nice.

Anyway, back to “I hear you”, because I’m going on a trip to the Dominican Republic at the end of April (also with an 18-month-old!), and while I’m sure a pair of four-inchers will find their way into my suitcase, because I am stubborn…what I’ll be wearing 90% of the time are 1) flip-flops, and 2) low wedges that are cute, but that I can actually walk in.
