Fall Day Trip Beauty

Fall activities are the best. The best!

And when it comes to beauty for these activities, it’s all about striking a balance.

Take, for example, a Saturday morning visit to an apple orchard. Your look should be chilled out (because the point is to have fun) and photo-worthy (because if you’re anything like me, an apple-picking outing with your child may involve a couple—OK, a couple hundred—family photos).

Here are some easy (but still glam) beauty fixes.

Day-After Hair

That photo up there is of me on our first family trip to the orchard a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t want to muck about with my hair and makeup too much—because hey, we wanted to get on the road – so the first order of the day was dirty hair.

That’s right. Day-after hair is your weekend best friend. Who wants to wrangle with a blow-dryer when there are apples waiting to be picked? All you need is a can of dry shampoo, and you can give your locks a quick fix in minutes. Just hold the can six to eight inches from your head, spritz the product onto your roots in short bursts, wait a minute or two to allow it to do its job, brush through strands and style as usual.

Fresh, Glowing Skin

A heavily made-up face is pretty much the last thing you want when you’re prancing around in the autumn leaves, so don’t even think about foundation.

When natural-looking (but still beautiful) skin is the goal, go for a bb cream, like La Roche-Posay Hydreane BB Cream, which moisturizes your face, protects it against the rays and evens out your skin tone. (Seriously, bb creams are the best. If you’ve never tried one, do it.) Then just add a touch of creamy concealer to cover up any pesky spots that the bb cream didn’t handle and a light dusting of peachy blush.

Bright Lips

Weekend mornings are for pancakes, not blending tools, so skip the shadow. When it comes to a speedy beauty solution, there’s nothing faster than a bare eye enhanced with a few coats of Dior DiorShow Mascara in Black and a bright lip.

I’m all about red lips year-round, but right now I’m loving a slightly flushed, almost ombré look. To get it, I start with balm. Then I apply a sheer red stain, like L’Oréal Colour Caresse by Colour Riche in Blushing Sequin, to the center of my lower lip only. I then press my lips together, and rub the color outward with my fingertip to distribute it. The result is color that’s heavier toward the center of my lips, lighter toward the outer edges and completely romantic.

Red Nails

I was originally going to recommend neutral nails because my weekends are full of so much moving around that chips seem unavoidable. But you know what?

You’re apple-picking.

Go for a red as bright as the fruit itself. L’Oréal Colour Riche Nail Color in Caught Red-Handed should do the trick.
