DIY Dog Heaven

My friend Alejandra recently sent me this Apartment Therapy Kitchen story called “10 Frozen Treats For Your Pets To Eat.” The list includes things like frozen egg, frozen liver (mmm), and frozen low-sodium broth. I decided to whip up a little something special for Lucy and Virgil, deposited said treat in the freezer…and promptly forgot all about it.

Until around 11PM last night, that is, when Kendrick came walking towards me holding our ice-cube tray with an expression of utter horror on his face.

“What…are these?”

Why, tuna ice cubes, of course!

The response was immediate, and dramatic. And wildly entertaining (at least to us).

If you want to elicit a similar response from your dogs, just put a small mound of tuna in each section of an ice-cube tray, fill about 1/3 of the way with water, and freeze. Other good things to freeze up for them: banana chunks, cheese cubes, and sliced-up hot dogs. If you’re feeling extra crafty, try blending some banana with a little peanut butter and a few splashes of water, and freezing the mixture in an ice-cube tray.
